ABOUT
PRINCE HALL

WHO IS PRINCE HALL

Prince Hall is widely recognized as the father of Black Freemasonry in the United States. Born between 1735 and 1738, his exact origins are somewhat unclear, though he is thought to have been born in Barbados or elsewhere in the Caribbean. He later moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked as a caterer, leatherworker, and laborer.

In 1775, Prince Hall and fourteen other African American men were initiated into Freemasonry in Boston through a charter granted by a British army lodge.

Later, due to the departure of British troops from the area and the closure of the military lodge, Prince Hall and his fellow Black Masons found it difficult to continue their Masonic activities. In response, Hall successfully petitioned the Grand Lodge of England, and in 1784, the African Lodge No. 459 of Boston was chartered, officially establishing a Black Masonic lodge in America.

Prince Hall was a notable abolitionist and community leader. He advocated for educational rights and the abolition of slavery, often petitioning state governments to end the inhumane practice. Under his leadership, the African Lodge grew and later became known as Prince Hall Freemasonry, spreading throughout the United States and beyond.

His legacy is celebrated for his pioneering role in African American civil rights and his contributions to spreading Freemasonry among African Americans. Prince Hall Freemasonry remains a vibrant and influential organization in today's African American community and the broader Masonic world.
